Publikasjonen er utarbeidet i forbindelse med det 23. nasjonale forskermøte for økonomer 2001 i Bø i Telemark. Den presenterer en samling av norske bidrag til internasjonal forskning om estimering av produkt- og kostnadsfunksjoner og viser det norske miljøets solide innsats på dette forskningsområdet.

Alle bidragene, bortsett fra to, er tidligere utgitt i velrenommerte internasjonale tidsskrifter, og gir et rimelig godt innblikk i den forskningen som har foregått på dette området i Norge fra midten på 60-tallet og fram til i dag. I tillegg til disse bidragene inneholder boken to innledende kapitler som er skrevet spesielt for denne artikkelsamlingen. Det ene er skrevet av de fire redaktørene, mens ett er skrevet av seniorforsker Vidar Ringstad, Telemarksforsking.
